Bumsnogger - 2002-2006

Bumsnogger were a band from Nottingham in the UK, apparently drunkely formed to play sludge! There's a definite Iron Monkey influence here, which of course means I love it, though there's a slightly more bouncy, stoner rock feel to Bumsnogger than IM. I remember seeing the name on forums and stuff a few years ago but had never actually heard anything from them until I found this! Unfortunately this was around the same time as I reinstalled Last.FM and it decided to submit all my tracks to Skype as 'mood messages'. My boss was not amused to find his Skype homepage filled with notifications that I was listening to Bumsnogger tracks like Being Fucked Over, Dutch Fisting and Murdering the Homeless!

This release compiles Bumsnogger's two EPs and one split 7", plus a couple of rehearsal recordings of unreleased tracks. Sounds like they were a great band so this is well worth a download.

Sea Bastard - Great Barrier Riff

So it's time for me to pimp my own shit again. For those who don't know, Funeral Hag died out around July this year. It was always Jon's band and he got bored of it, so that was that. Somewhat fortunately for us, Jovian (another Brighton doom band) had split a month or two before us, which meant that the mighty Oliver Irongiant was no longer in a band. Both Steve and I instantly thought of Oli when we decided we should find another guitarist, and thus Sea Bastard was born!

I like to think SB has the best of both worlds; the groove of Hag and the relentless slowness of Jovian, plus a little something extra! These first 3 songs were written in about a month after starting the band and recorded live and dirty (apart from the vocals) at 284 Studios on Brighton seafront. Be warned, this demo sounds pretty horrible. It's meant to.

Someone made this video for YouTube if you wanna check out what we sound like. This is our fastest and (so far) most popular song, Aqua Vitae. It's about whiskey.

The Amenta - V01D

Right, I know, it's been bloody ages. I got rather distracted with life, or video games, or fuck knows what the hell I was doing. Anyways, I'm back again and here's something awesome for you all. I grabbed an album by The Amenta a while ago because they were playing at Wacken Open Air. I go to Wacken every year and I generally try and check out all the bands beforehand so I know who to go see. Anyways, I grabbed The Amenta's Ocassus album and rather enjoyed it. Then I completely forgot about it and forgot what they were called. Fortunately, I managed to remember the other day and grabbed some more of their stuff.

The sound is pretty brutal, and seems to be described as Industrial Death Metal, right up my street since The Berzerker are one of my favourite bands! The Amenta are a bit more traditionally Death Metal than The Berzerker, the drums are a bit more natural sounding than the gabber-style triggered kicks you'll find there (only a bit), but just as relentless and heavy. There're plenty of keys adding depth to the sound throughout and some nice industrially sounding intros and breaks. Well worth a listen if you like that sort of thing.

V01D is an interesting project. It's a free release with 16 tracks and 4 videos, mostly composed of re-recordings or remixes of tracks from previous releases. I guess this makes it as good a place to start as any and the production is solid throughout, the re-recordings sounding even more brutal than the original versions! Crypsis - Choir For The Carrion

Crypsis are a thrash metal band from Brighton, UK. I first encountered them when they played at the Brightona bike rally last year with my band Funeral Hag. Their style is pure oldschool European thrash metal, in the vein of Kreator and Sodom, though the vocals really remind me of Death! They have supported such mighty thrash bands as Gama Bomb and Death Angel (as did Funeral Hag :D).

Choir For The Carrion is their first release aside from a three track demo in 2009, and the sound on this is much more polished. You can grab the EP for free from their Bandcamp page, or there is now a CD version available for purchase. The CD launch party is taking place tonight at the Prince Albert in Brighton, so head on down for some great Brighton thrash if you can!

Annihilator - Total Annihilation

Annihilator have been on of my favourite bands for years, ever since I picked up their King Of The Kill album from the £1 bin at Our Price records in my hometown of Fleet. Yes, it was that long ago the Our Price was still called Our Price, before it became the ill-fated, stock-free Virgin V-Shop (which was possibly the most retarded idea ever, why go to a shop where you have to order everything off the internet if you can order it off the internet from home and it'll cost less?).

Anyways, Annihilator are an oldschool thrash band from Canada. Their older stuff was quite traditional thrash but with some quirky/comedy moments and some really odd riffs thrown in. I'd still say Annihilator main man Jeff Waters is one of my favourite guitarists, perhaps 2nd only to the mighty Jeff Loomis of Nevermore. Hopefully one day their powers will combine in a dual Jeff shred attack, but anyways I digress.

Annihilator have had a lot of different lineups over the last 26 years, with Waters remaining the only constant member. The most noticeable of these have been the succession of vocalists. My personal favourite was Joe Comeau who sang on the Carnival Diablos and Waking The Fury albums. I was not keen on current vocalist Dave Padden at first, though his style has grown on me over the last 4 albums (well 3 of them anyways, didn't get on with Metal at all!).

Today's offering is a best of type compilation Annihilator have recently released through Earache Records for free download. There is a good mix of tracks from throughout most of their career, though there seems to be a lack of tracks from their first few albums, perhaps due to licensing issues with Roadrunner Records who released them originally. Stand out tracks for me are Ultra Motion, Battered and King Of The Kill. Slightly disappointed none of my favourite Annihilator tracks are on there (Kraf Dinner, The Perfect Virus, Evil Appetite (Don't Bother Me), Annihilator (King of the Kill version), Knight Jumps Queen), but I do always have obscure tastes.

Swarm Of Nails and Throatruiner Records - Hate (Fucking) Life

Hate/Life is a compilation of tracks from various independant sludge, doom and post-rock artists with releases on Swarm Of Nails and Throatruiner Records. There's quite an interesting mix of styles on here, from crushingly heavy post-hardcore to slow, drudging doom, ambient to black metal! Mostly it's all pretty slow and heavy, which is just the way I like it. There's some great stuff on here, including several awesome bands I was already aware of; Huata (whose album I posted a few months ago), Art Of Burning Water (who I saw at the Cowley Club in Brighton with DKH and Drainland) Birds In Row, As We Draw and Pigeon (all of whom have free releases I'll be posting over the coming weeks or months). GrooveMonsteR - Rock Was Dead

GrooveMonsteR were a comedy stoner rock band from Brighton in the UK. For a number of years they made audiences all over Brighton laugh their asses off whilst remaining completely unable to stand still and look miserable, as stoner rock fans ought to do. GrooveMonsteR supply solid rock grooves with amusing and comical lyrics about all kinds of things over the top. Such classics as Rocket Mice and Twist Your Beard always get a great crowd reaction.

Rock Was Dead is a compilation of all the tracks GrooveMonsteR ever recorded for their various demo releases. This compilation was released online as a warm-up for what was probably the
last ever GrooveMonsteR show at Hydrant in Brighton on the 22nd August 2010, with support from my band Funeral Hag. There are also live recordings of both sets which may or may not be released to the internets at some point...

Wiht - Wiht

Wiht are an instrumental stoner doom band from Leeds in the UK. Whilst somewhat reminiscent of other instrumental stoner bands like Karma To Burn and Sons Of Alpha Centauri, Wiht's sound is quite a bit heavier than either of those and more doomy in pace. Their material works well as instrumental, with a massive guitar tone that must have taken a lot of layers to create. It's not all heavy grooves, there are some nice chilled out droney and almost ambient sections. Well worth a listen, and as always if you like it go buy it! £4 on CD from their Myspazz, not bad for >40 minutes of kickass stoner doom.

Mother Susurrus - Mother Susurrus

Mother Susurrus are a doom/sludge band from Finland. Their sound is quite droney and sludgey, heavy yet with plenty of melody as well. Beautifully bleak and very well crafted, the EP rises and falls like post rock but never quite drops below a doomy level of heaviness and sludge. There are no clean guitars here! This EP consists of 2 tracks, Whoremonger and Apocatastasis, totalling 32:26 of awesome doominess.

Hesper Payne - Unclean Rituals

Hesper Payne are a Lovecraft inspired doom band from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in the UK. I posted their Titans Of The North Sea EP a while ago, which was rather good. Now they're back with a new album, Unclean Rituals, which continues with their awesome brand of bleak, detuned doom with death metal style vocals. Right, not done an update for ages because I'm a massive twat! I have amassed quite a collection of links for you however, so I shall endeavour to keep the updates reasonably regular in future. After all, anyone who's loyal enough a reader to still be reading is bound to be itching for a fix of new free music by now!

This time I shall be shamelessly promoting my mates' band's album! Enos are a Brighton doom band mixing elements of doom, stoner, prog and space rock. Their first album was a long time in the making and mixing drove their front-man to despair. Fortunately for us he persevered and we get served up these 5 tracks of psychedelic doom for free! There's also a great comic book as a PDF with the album, which some of you may recognise from one of Chris' other projects Thee Big Black, a Brighton based fanzine, webzine, forum and promotions group for all things stoner, doom, drone, sludge and anything else somone feels like contributing. It also seems they've split up, annoying as I hadn't really heard much from them before. Their stuff is slow and heavy, with some quiet droney interludes, but overall doomy as fuck. Check it out!

I don't really remember Earthtone9 from back in the day, but it seems they were most influential on various people I know. I remember them being around and written about in Kerrang and Metal Hammer, think I met someone whose brother was in the band at a party or something once, but I don't know that I ever actually listened to them. My main exposure to them has been because their singer is in one of my favourite Brighton bands, Blackstorm. Anyways, it seems they have reformed and released this best-of compilation for you to download for free. I downloaded it, of course, and it's actually pretty good. A mix of hardcore and nu-metal, nothing too technical but solid rhythms and nice melody. Shame the vocals just make me wish it was Blackstorm!

Talbot - Eos

Here's another mighty slab of doom from Estonian 2-piece Talbot. This is their first full-length release, and it certainly shows they can keep up the doom for much longer than demonstrated on their previous Tundra EP (which I posted just over a year ago). I liked Tundra so much I bought the CD-R version off the band, which features remixes of 2 tracks not found on the download only version. EOS is even better than Tundra, plenty of monolithic heaviness and also some nice psychedelic interludes. Well worth a listen so go download it!

Hiram - If Up Were Along

Not done an update for a while, so here's a quick one because this album is awesome and I need to stop being so lazy.

Today's offering is an album called If Up Were Along by Hiram from Sheffield, UK. There's something about the north that seems to breed good doom bands, I guess it's the whole bleak northern vibe, not that we southerners can't compete (or at least I'd like to think we can, what with me being in a doomy metal band).

If Up Were Along is pretty epic, a 2 disc affair at over 1 hour 30 minutes. It starts off with a clean/acousticy intro with some weird noises but soon gets down to its doomy business, with a sound that's reminiscent of Black Sheep Wall if they hadn't listened to quite so much Meshuggah! The whole album is a nice mix of doom and heavy post rock, with some nice melodic passages but enough heaviness and screaming to keep a metaller like me happy as well.

Avalanche On Play Volumes 1 and 2

Avalanche On Play is a tribute to the music of Justin K Broadrick (of Godflesh, Jesu, Curse Of The Golden Vampire, Greymachine and many, many other projects). Unlike most tribute albums, this one features entirely new songs as opposed to covers of songs Broadrick has worked on. The music from the compilation is entirely provided by the users of the avalanchers.co.uk forum. Some users were discussing how much Broadrick had influenced their music, and decided to put together a tribute compilation. Obviously this project found massive support in the forums as they ended up releasing two volumes at once with a total running time of 2 hours 11 minutes!

The music itself is somewhat varied, as one might expect given Broadrick's varied output over the years. Songs range from Jesu-like shoegazing misery to more relentless Godflesh style bleak industrial pounding. I've rather enjoyed all of it, so hopefully you will too!

Huata are a stoner doom band from France. Riffs as big and fuzzy as Electric Wizard, but a little more lethargic (if that's even possible) and growlier, more Ramesses like vocals. This EP is their second release and features five tracks, with a running time of 34:18. Well worth a listen!

I was first alerted to Trippy Wicked & The Cosmic Children Of The Knight by Mike, singer from awesome Brighton stoner band Uncle Debauchery. This is some massive, heavy stoner rock, with powerful melodic vocals. Their singer can really hold a note. Awesome stuff, so check them out!

Right, started writing this post almost a year ago but forgot about it and it got lost in the drafts folder. Anyways, a double whammy of Nerdcore action from Kabuto The Python. First up is Shed Skins, the first EP from the mighty Kabuto The Python. Definitely one of my favourite nerdcore artisits so far. Quite monotone, but brilliant timing and words and some massive beats! His Myspazz description reads "KABUTO IS A MAMMOTH CREATURE IN SIZE AND STRENGTH WITH A HOMONID BUILD. MANY SPIKES ADORN THE CREATURE'S BODY, WHILE ITS MAW IS FIERCE AND IMPOSING". So, there you go. Ewigkeit - Return To The Land Of Fog

Now defunct, Ewigkeit was a one man project of Brighton based music wizard James Fogarty. Ewigkeit's sound varied greatly during their active period from full on black metal to the melodic, industrial tinged metal we hear on this free EP, released on Earache in 2006 just before Mr Fog burned all this music contracts in despair at the state of the industry. Fogarty has now moved on to other projects, most of which can be found for free download at his new anti-label Death To Music Productions and some of which I'm sure to be posting in the near future! This EP contains 3 tracks of beautifully constructed industrial metal, some awesome harmonies, great guitar sound. Go check it out!

Sons Of Liberty - Brush Fires Of The Mind

Sons Of Liberty is a solo project of Iced Earth guitarist Jon Schaffer. Whilst he describes it as a politically neutral project, it seems a little bit over-patriotic right-wing conspiracy-theorist influenced to me, but then to a lot of Americans I guess I'm a bleeding-heart liberal pinko (or even worse, a foreigner!).

Anyways, lyrical content and inflamatory band names aside, this album is very much in an Iced Earth vein, though sees Jon Schaffer taking on lead vocal duties himself for the first time (and presumably everything else since it's a solo project). Iced Earth will already be familiar with Schaffer's vocal style as he does a lot of vocal work on Iced Earth stuff. Think he even sang a whole song by himself when I saw them at Wacken.

Don't have a direct download link, but you can get one emailed to you by signing up to the mailing list on their website. It's only 96Kbps, but you'll get the idea from there. There are also 256Kbps MP3 and high-quality M4A versions download available for purchase. There doesn't seem to be any official artwork, so I put together the cover on this page 'cause I like to have artwork on my MP3s!

B A T I L L U S are a doom band from Brooklyn, NY, USA. This is their first EP and is three tracks of rather nice instrumental doom (a fourth track is present on the CD release, which can be purchased here), about as heavy as the Batillus class supertanker for which they are presumably named. They seem to have recruited a vocalist since this EP, and the newer stuff sounds rather good also. Apparently this EP was tracked live and mixed in only two days at Black Box Studio in Hansen, MA, but it sounds like they took all the time they needed!

Doom Metal Alliance Sampler Volume 9

The Doom Metal Alliance is a Myspace page dedicated to all things doom related. There is also a related blog, Doommantia, which features reviews of the latest doom releases (these can also be found on the DMA Myspace Blog) and their player features tracks from various underground doom bands. So if you like doom and want to discover some new doom bands then head on over there.

They also do a series of compilations called the Doom Metal Alliance Samplers. The latest in this series, Volume 9, is the first one to come to my attention and is certainly a fine specimen! It features plenty of slow, doomy heaviness so go download it! Tacklisting as follows:

FDISK - Connection Reset By Satan

As any regular readers will know, I'm rather into my nerdcore hip-hop due to my love of hip-hop and unashamed geekery. Anyways, for a long time I've toyed with the idea of starting a nerdcore metal band. Well, it seems that FDISK have rather beaten me to it! As one might guess from the name (well, if one was nerdy enough), they're a computer geekery inspired thrash metal band from LA. I think they must have added my band Funeral Hag on Myspazz over the weekend when I was sick and ignoring the internets as they appeared in our friends list, and of course I couldn't resist checking them out! The tunes aren't bad and the lyrics are most amusing, though the demo is a little unpolished. Definitely worth checking out though, especially if you, like me, are of a somewhat geeky pursuasion.

Arteriosus - Promo Demo

Arteriosus are a progressive doom band from Brighton. I saw them a few weeks back with my mates Here There Be Monsters and the mighty Blackstorm at The Prince Albert and was rather impressed. Normally not too into the buildy post-rockish type doom, but these guys managed to pull it off in a way I rather enjoyed! Tons of feedback and huge guitar and bass sounds, as you would expect from a doom band, and some rather nice melodic elements too. I swapped a demo CD of my band Funeral Hag for theirs and it is rather good. Just noticed you can download it for free, so here it is! Enjoy. I shall be going to see them this evening at The Hope , along with From Beneath It Devours who are also rather good.

The Droning Earth compilations have long been one of my favourite compilations series, collecting the best of stoner, doom, drone and sludge from across the internets and all around the world. I first became aware of them when Droning Earth Volume XIII featured my bandmates' other band Sabazius. There have been another 16 releases since then, all featuring some great material.

Milfist Kadawa - Still Dwellin' After All These Years

Once again, I stumbled across these guys whilst rambling about the internets. I think it was a post on some other band's wall on Myspazz saying to download their album. Anyways, always on the hunt for new free music I decided to check out the link and discovered Milfist Kadawa. They are a psychedelic doom band from Israel, and beyond that I know very little about them. The sound ranges from full on psych doom heaviness to some acoustic stuff that almost reminds me of Down in their quieter moments. However, this is likely to be followed by a massive wall of fuzz or some droning distortion. An album of contrasts, but well worth a listen!

The Shizit - The Shizit

The Shizit are an interesting project, a mix of metal, industrial, gabber, drum & bass, breakbeat and a ton of other genres. They started as a band during the late 90s they put out a few Digital Audio Music CDs through MP3.com, back in the early days of MP3. After enjoying some success on MP3.com they put out one album, Soundtrack For The Revolution (often abreviated to SoFTeR) through Alec Empire's Digital Hardcore Recordings label, and then disbanded due to personal differences.

Now they're back, or at least partially. JP Anderson was half of the original lineup, the man behind Rabbit Junk, and is now the whole band (as with most of his other projects). This new album is very much in the spirit of the original Shizit release, but sounds much heavier than its predecessor - no bad thing if you ask me!

Gama Bomb are fucking awesome! They're a thrash band from Ireland who love to thrash it out in a comedy fashion. They are so awesome that they've decided to give away their latest album for free. I don't really know what else to say about this album than that it's fucking awesome. Seriously. So go download it now, and go see them on tour. They're playing at the Engine Rooms in Brighton, amongst other places of course, on the 10th of November along with local thrashers Crypsis and tickets are only £6.50! Emergency Pizza Party are a Nerdcore supergroup, featuring the talents of MC Wreckshin, Sir Up, Betty Rebel, Fanatical, Funky 49 and Benjamin Bear. They cover a variety of topics in their nerdy rhyme-spitting, and there are plenty of funny moments and awesome beats. I also thoroughly recommend their second album Zombie Emergency Defence, which is a concept album set after a zombie apocalypse. You can buy it on their Myspace page.

Something a bit odd this time, at least to me. Thy Apokalypse seem to be an industrial black metal band, which althout it seems an obvious combination isn't something I've heard before! It's kinda hard to know what to make of this. There are some great industrial beats and ambience, and plenty of black metal screaching and blast beats. Give it a listen!

Funeral Hag - Demo 2009

A bit of a special release for you today, at least for me anyway, it's the demo from my band, Funeral Hag! We play a mix of stoner rock, sludgecore and doom metal that I hope you're going to love. The demo has 3 tracks and clocks in at 18 minutes and 18 seconds long.

Funeral Hag started last year as a solo project of our guitarist Jon, who wrote and recorded Nellie Longarms by himself and demoed another song, Screams Of A Banshee, in 2008. In early 2009 Jon decided he wanted to take the band further and started looking for other members. He quickly recruited his workmate Nev of Sabazius (possibly familiar to any regular readers as I post their releases on here) to play 2nd guitar. Nev in turn suggested his bandmate Steve to play bass, and Steve got me involved on vocals, along with our old mate George on drums. Thus Funeral Hag was born.

We've now played a few gigs (videos from our first on our Youtube page) and recorded this demo, and are hoping to make something of ourselves! So download our demo and enjoy the sludge. :D

D-Trash Records - 2009 New Releases In A Continuous Mix

D-Trash Records are a Canadian industrial digital hardcore label that I've been following for a while. They release a variety of music from straight up industrial through breakbeat and drum & bass to full on noise, so very much in the spirit of Digital Hardcore Recordings, Alec Empire's record label that released all the Atari Teenage Riot stuff. This release is one of many new-release mixes that D-Trash has put out over the years, a continuous mix of a selection of songs from the year's new releases. The Hard Way is a hardcore band from Brighton, England, formed in 2009. Beyond this I can't really say much as there ain't much info about them on Last.FM or Myspazz. Not normally that into my Hardcore, but these guys are pretty thrashy as hardcore goes. They rather remind me of SSS in fact! They've kindly posted their demo online for free, so check them out. Necro Deathmort - This Beat Is Necrotronic

Necro Deathmort are a very odd band! I'm not entirely sure how, but I stumbled upon them in my wanderings around the internets one afternoon. A British 2 piece, they mix all kinds of odd sounds together and I find the results rather enjoyable.

The album starts with some weird digital noise that would be at home on any noisecore album, then goes on to a stomping industrial breakbeat track, followed by a nice slow instrumental doom track, followed by a floaty, ambient soundscape... This album is all over the place, but in a very good way! You can download it for free, courtesy of Distraction Records, but if you do like it then please go buy it from their website.

StonerRock.comp Volume 1

As the name suggests, this is a compilation of stoner rock put together by the readership of http://www.stonerrock.com/ and posted for free on that site. Stonerrock.com is a great source for news, reviews and CDs of stoner rock, doom, sludge and other related genres. The original idea to do a compilation came from the forums, where forum member Balthazar pointed out that a lot of the forum's members were in unsigned bands. Obviously other forum members thought this was a good idea and the first StonerRock.comp was born. 26 tracks of stoner rock clocking in at an impressive 2 hours 52 minutes! Some great tunes on here so go check it out. Not made it through to any of the other volumes yet, but there are 8 in total so bound to be some more great tracks on there.

Bong Ra - Resonance FM (Radio Set 2005)

Something a little bit different for you today. A nice live set from breakcore/drum & bass DJ Bong-Ra. I chose this particular set from the many free ones on his website because it features a sample of Green Machine by Kyuss, Raining Blood by Slayer (think it's a different remix than the Concorde Dawn one) and War Pigs by Black Sabbath! Freakin' awesome. Bong-Ra first came to my attention when I downloaded a drum & bass mix of his from the late 90s and he's still going strong it seems! This mix is an interesting collision of drum & bass, breaks, beats and some metal. Aaaaawwweeesssooooommmeeee!

Bong-Ra also did an awesome remix EP of some old Earache death metal tracks called Grindkrusher which I thoroughly recommend getting hold of, very much in a Hellspawn vein with some nice gabber beats and some crushing metal riffs and screams.

This EP comes from the mighty Hesper Payne of Newcastle. Proper heavy stuff, nice bit of doom mixed with some death metal, sludge and all sorts. Greg(o)rian are an experimental doom band from London/Essex. They describe the album as "Gregorian’s debut full length, 43 minutes of Lo-Fi, atmospheric, sludge drone doom, influenced by My Dying Bride, Jesu, Sleep, and Sunn O)))." I'd say that's probably about right. The album's kinda post-rocky sounding, in that the guitars aren't ridiculously heavy all the time and there's a whole slow buildup vibe going on. The vocals remind me of Godflesh 'cause they sound kind of like a pissed bloke shouting at you down an echoey corridor, which I quite like. Anyways, it's free so go download it!

Moloch are an awesome sludgecore band from Nottingham. Not a lot of info on their Myspazz, but they're fuckin' awesome! Second album from my bandmates in Funeral Hag, Steve and Nev of Sabazius. This is some more proper doom, four tracks totalling 2:32:32 of grinding heaviness and lightswitch solos. Yes that's right, apparently this album features the sound of Nev's lightswitch. Think I'm listening to that bit right now. Of course, two of the tracks are intro and outro so really it's 2 massively long doom tracks! I wouldn't suggest listening to Sabazius if you're feeling impatient as they take quite a while to get going... well if you ever consider doom to have got going. I guess the fact that it doesn't is kinda the point!

Talbot - Tundra EP

Here's some nice Estonian doom from Talbot, a two piece drone/sludge band. Apparently they've been going since 2003, though I first stumbled accross them the other day. Their Tundra EP is available for free download from their website. They have an interesting take on the doom genre, with a bass heavy sound that's vaguely reminiscent of industrial doom, but with a more organic beat provided by live drums instead of drum machines. The vocals are an interesting mix of more melodic stoner metal lines with some traditional doom screaming thrown in for good measure. The EP is also seeing a re-release on Consouling Sounds as a limited run of 100 CD-Rs, featuring two bonus remixes not featured on the downloadable version which can currently be listened to on their Myspace.

A Horse Called War - We Ain't Proud Of This

I don't know a lot about A Horse Called War other than that their music is pretty good and several members of the band like Warhammer 40,000. Originally came to my attention because they were supposed to be playing at the Hobgoblin in Brighton last Saturday. Unfortunately they couldn't make the show due to work commitments and transport problems, but I'm hoping they'll make it to Brighton sometime soon.

Anyways, their sound is very reminiscent of Iron Monkey, with lots of feedback, slow, downtuned, sludgy guitars and screechy screamed vocals over the top. They've recorded a demo, which I am posting here, and an EP, which you can buy from their Myspazz. One of the tracks from the EP is on the Myspazz player but I can't comment on the rest as I only just ordered the CD.

Anyways, I'd thoroughly recommend you download their demo. There's a link on their Myspazz or just click the one below!

Goretorture - Cannibal Commando

Don't really know a lot about Goretorture, and can't even remember where I first heard them! Think I downloaded a torrent of their album from Demonoid.com back in 2004 or 2005, probably on the basis of the name alone. Whatever happened, I was certainly not disappointed!

The first of the Arnie tribute bands to come to my attention (though I think Arnocorps started first, but then they wouldn't call themselves an Arnie tribute band), Goretorture are definitely the heaviest. Whilst they lack the comedy and groove aspects of Arnocorps, they more than make up for it in sheer aggression and heaviness. Their in your face grindcore sound shits all over As I Gay Crying vocalist Tim Lambesis' Austrian Death Machine, despite the much cheaper production and lack of fancy cartoon-drawn artwork and merchandise. And best of all, they have some free music for me to post on my blog for you all to download (assuming anyone's actually out there reading this after I've not updated for like a whole month).

There are a load of tracks available from www.mikseri.net/goretorture including four tracks from 2004's Promised To Kill You Last... I Lied, their debut album and I think the only on you can actually buy (see info on the page for details), 2005's Cannibal Commando demo and a collection of unreleased tracks that weren't on either release. Too many tracks to link individually, so I'll let you go look for yourself. However, I did find a Rapidshare mirror for Cannibal Commando (192Kbps instead of 160 and also seems to have two of the unreleased tracks, Asshole and Sluts, in the .RAR) so a link for that will follow. Blood Island Raiders - 16-17 (Demo)

Some more vikingy stonery doominess today from the Blood Island Raiders! The Raiders are a London based metal band who play an interesting mix of stoner rock and viking metal. They first came to my attention due to their close relationship with Crowning Glory, who I have been following with interest having seen them supporting Orange Goblin a few years ago. They've done an EP, an album and a split EP all of which are available from this page of their website, and all of which are thoroughly worth getting your hands on. When I bought their EP from Amazon, it turned out the seller I'd selected was actually the band themselves so I got a load of stickers and stuff with it.

Today's offering is their demo from 2002, 1617. It's available from the sounds page of their website as individual tracks, unfortunately only at 112Kbps but at least it's tagged! I tried to upload a .rar file of my tagged and sorted copy with album art, but for some reason Rapidshare didn't like my password. So links to the individual tracks again like last time!

Argus - Demo 2007

This is a bloody brilliant demo that I discovered amongst the jewels in the Doom Metal Demo Pack torrent that I downloaded a while ago because it featured my good friends Sabazius'
Terror Is They Name. There's some really great stuff in there, including demos from Grand Magus (a personal favourite amongst the stoner/doom genre) and the mighty Sleep. Not entirely sure of the legal situation for this torrent however, though I know that Sabazius at least were willing participants. As far as I know you can't actually buy most of these demos, and many of them are available for free from the bands themselves, as is the case with today's offering from Argus!

Argus, of Franklin, Pennsylvania (which seems to be a rather doomy state at the moment!) mix elements of doom, stoner, sludgecore, traditional and viking/battle metal to produce an upbeat but still heavy and somewhat melancholy fusion of the slower metal genres. Of course there's plenty of higher-tempo chugging in that traditional-metal galloping style, but lots of slow, groovy riffs as well. The vocals are melodic, often harmonised and quite viking metally, a-la Grand Magus. If you're into stoner or doom, and particularly if you liked the Electric Horsemen EP I posted here last week then I highly recommend you download this demo right now!

Sabazius/Dröne Split EP

Got some more awesome doom for you today, once again from my mates Nev and Steve of Sabazius (hopefully soon to be my bandmates in Funeral Hag, if things work out well at practice on Saturday). Today's offering is their newly released split EP with Dröne from Aberdeen, Scotland, available on Black Winter Recordings.

This split has been in the works for a long while and there has been a 3 minute clip of Torah, the Sabazius track featured here, on Sabazius' Myspace player for quite some time! A nice preview, but not a patch on the full 22:24 glory of the whole track. More slow and heavy riffage with Steve reading some mystical religious texts with loads of reverb. Eeeexcellent. I must confess the Dröne tracks, Far Beyond The Night and Methodone, aren't exactly my kinda thing, but I did manage to listen to both of them the whole way through. Some nice sounds, pretty mellow, and does what it says on the tin - i.e. is nice and droney.

Right, today's offering is something rather strange. Spotted the .torrent on Demonoid and was so intrigued by the name alone that I had to download it! This is some pretty awesome chiptune stuff, but in a metal style. That's right, metal tunes but played on an NES style synth. The sounds themselves are pretty traditional 8-bit fare, but the songwriting is amazing. There's some pretty complicated stuff going on here. If this was played on guitars instead of synths it would probably be one of the most awesome metal bands ever! The following description is from Dr. Z's myspace page:

Out from the sound processor of a mutated Nintendo Entertainment System comes Dr. Zilog, part machine, part transient thought. His esoteric frequency patterns and decibal rates enter the auditory canal fabricating the euphoric illusion of music.

Bombadeal (The Green Man) - Songs From The Wood

Time for something a little bit different! Some Brighton hip-hop with a twist; the beats are made up from sampled folk music. Discovered in my wanderings through the tangled webs that make up the internets, on the recommendation of a certain Professor Elemental, whose work I have very much enjoyed, I decided to check out the works of Tom Caruana, the man behind the beats for The Menagerie (see 19th December post). It seems his works are quite prolific, and you can find more of them on his website Tea Sea Records (see what he's done there? Clever eh). Haven't listened to much of it yet as there is much there! However, I am very much enjoying Bombadeal and the Green Men of the Mythical Forest and recommend everyone to go download it and listen in! The description from Tea Sea Records website follows:

Tom Bombadeal was conceived in 2004 while I lived in Forest Row. I started work producing new tracks sampling folk music and rapping as the merry fellow that is Bombadeal.

The story is set in a mythical land where Bombadeal and his friends live in a woodland village. All is good for the villagers until they hear word that their village has been targeted for a violent rampage for the precious crystals that lie beneath the village.

In the run up to releasing the album I have put out 'Songs From The Wood' which is free to download!!!!
It's a collection of bits n bobs I've done since 2004.

The main album has all been made in the last 2 years and features Tom Caruana as Tom Bombadeal, Sadie Jemmmett as Goldberry, Flake Brown as the Scene Setter, Longusto as Longfellow the Blacksmith, Vecks as Jack Lumber, Elemental as Papa-Quar, Dizraeli as Goo, See as Agur The Seer, Baba Brinkman, Joncept, Mole (character names unknown).

Been a while since my last update, so here's a particularly good one for ya! Electric Horsemen are a sludge/stoner/doom band from Lancaster County, Philadelphia in the US. This is some seriously awesome heavy shit! Heavy, crunching guitars with some nice guitar ornamentation that is reminiscent of Cathedral in their more stoner days. Vocals range from High On Fire/Crowbar style semi-melodic through to full on Iron Monkey screaming. This EP was given away on their Myspace page. Check it the fuck out, this is some crushingly heavy yet mightily groovy shit!

Right, no updates for a while 'cause I been busy with Xmas stuff like watching all of Babylon 5 in a row (only got half way through the 2nd season and >1 week of 2 weeks holiday, things not looking good for this mission) and general festivity. Fortunately some of my friends have been less idle over the holiday period. Once again the kindly folks known as Sabazius (i.e. Nev and Steve) have released a free MP3 single for you all to download. This one's a cover of Sympathy For The Devil by the Rolling Stones. I don't know the original so no idea what it's meant to sound like, but I'm guessing it's not 25 minutes of doom! The Menagerie - Wild Kingdom

The Menagerie were a Brighton based hip-hop collective who now seem to have become somewhat defunct. They released this one album, but never managed to finish off their 2nd though there are 4 tracks from the sessions on their Myspace player. The album features Nick Maxwell on the decks and the lyrical stylings of Dr Syntax and Elemental. They were joined by Koaste shortly after the recording of this album, and he also features on the newer tracks.

I discovered these guys through Elemental after stumbling across his Cup Of Brown Joy video on Youtube. I would also throughly recommend checking out Elemental and Mr Simmonds' album The Gentlemens Club which is available from Rarekind Records in Brighton, or on iTunes if you will stoop to such levels.

Anyways, the music is pretty chilled out and groovy Brighton hip-hop covering a variety of topics. Was listening to it the other day and my housemate wandered in and commented that it was a bit jazzy for me, so take from that what you will.

Don't know much about these guys, apart from that they are awesome! A fusion of many different metal styles, at times they remind of me Grand Magus, Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne's solo stuff, NWOBHM bands like Blitzkrieg and there's even a bit of an AC/DC sound in there at points. I stumbled across them on one of my many bored wanderings through Myspace and was pleased to see that they had a link to download their album for free.

Lots of slow and heavy riffage, though more of a warm 70s sound than the usual heavy sludge, and some nice lead guitar and more up-tempo grooves. This is one album you really don't want to miss. These German doom mongers have produced one of the best albums I've heard this year.

MOMT Records are an independent label from Newbury in the UK. They specialise in unusual electronic music, particularly industrial rock, electro, IDM and ambient. MOMT seeks to fight back against the current pasteurised music scene filled with production-line indie rock bands whose image is more important than their music. They first came to my attention when they released an album called Replicate 01 , a tribute to my favourite band of all time Front Line Assembly featuring many of their artists.

MOMT have now been operative for 5 years, and to celebrate this they have released a free online compilation called Carry On Lovin'. Carry On Lovin' features a pretty representative mix of styles and genres, from the dirty industrial of Vultures and Audio War to the floaty ambient sounds of Gusto Extermination Fluid and Skink. The Shizit - Live At Club Spirit

The Shizit were an industrial metal band from Seattle formed in 1999. Originally promoted through the now defunct MP3.com, they sought to challenge the way the music industry worked and bring underground sounds to the masses. They released two DAM CDs (MP3.com's CDs featuring the regular CD version of the tracks alongside high quality MP3 files), Evil Inside in 1999 and Script Kiddie in 2000. They then went on to release a full length album entitled Soundtrack For The Revolution, which saw releases on several different labels (all now defunct) including E115 Records (original release) and Alec Empire's Digital Hardcore before disbanding in 2002. Two other albums have now been released posthumously through Canadian online collective D-Trash Records, Remixed For The Revolution (2004) and Live At Club Spirit (2008).

Their sound is similar to Rabbit Junk (the frontman JP's current project), but heavier and more aggressive. I always described it as gabber metal due to the relentless beats and highly distorted kick sounds, a la gabber. The result is an impressive fusion of metal, industrial, punk, gabber, hip-hop, hardcore dance and many other genres that is full of energy and just doesn't let up!

Today's offering is one I only just discovered, a D-Trash re-release of the Live At Club Spirit recording. This show was originally posted on The Shizit's MP3.com page as individual tracks back in the days of dialup internet connections and thus is unfortunately only available in 128K MP3 format. The D-Trash release sees the original four tracks supplemented by three new remixes by SLIP and a cover of Ministry's Just One Fix originally found on an Industrial compilation from 2001 called Signal To Noise: Reinforced Industrial Hits, and later on Cleopatra's A Taste Of Sin compilation and An Industrial Tribute To Ministry.

Monsterworks - Spacial Operations

Monsterworks are a metal band originally from Palmerston North/Wellington, New Zealand and formed in 1996 and reformed in London in 2003. They mix a number of metal styles to form a highly technical breed of progressive metal, including elements of thrash, death and power metal. Information on them seems to be quite sparse, though their Encyclopaedia Metallum page discography lists 5 full length albums they have under their belts!

Spacial Operations is their 2007 offering, available for free from their website http://www.supermetal.net. It is one of those rare concept albums that has a sci-fi theme rather than fantasy, improves its standing in my eyes no end, even before listening to it! I've always been more of a sci-fi fan than fantasy, though most metallers seem to feel the other way. Having only found a few examples of sci-fi themed metal (Fear Factory's Obsolete and Iron Savior amongst others), I am always eager to discover more.

If you like any kind of metal, I'd thoroughly recommend downloading Spacial Operations. It's quite a varied album with some great riffs and beautiful guitar work, and of course it's free!

Rabbit Junk - Project Nonagon Part 1, The Struggle

Rabbit Junk are an industrial metal band with heavy punk, hip-hop and electro influences (apparently this is called hardclash) hailing from Seattle. They were formed in 2004 after the breakup of front man JP's previous project The Shizit (Myspace) , a brilliant gabber metal band who will be making appearances in these pages in the future. Rabbit Junk takes the raw energy of The Shizit and combines it with more advanced production technique, more melodic elements and a slightly punkier sound (not enough to be bad). With some catchy hooks, serious riffage and awesome sequencing there's something there for everyone!

Project Nonagon is an extension of Rabbit Junk's last album, This Life Is Where You Get Fucked. This Life Is Where You Get Fucked is a concept album in three parts: The Struggle, Ghetto Blasphemer and This Death Is Where You Get Life. The idea behind Project Nonagon is to release a 3 track EP to build on the themes of each of these parts. This first part is, obviously, the extension of The Struggle part of This Life...

Today's offering is very much in a different vein than Hospital Of Death. Sabazius are a Brighton-based doom band who are possibly the slowest band I've ever heard! I think they're awesome, but I am kinda biased since they are my friends Nev and Steve's band. Slower than tectonic plate movements and heavy as said tectonic plates, they sound fucking evil. My favourite track so far is The Goat, which is available for purchase from Dead Pilot Records right here. It only costs £3.40 for 19 minutes of crushing doom, and the 3" CD in mini-DVD case looks really nice. Only 52 pressed, so get in there ASAP.

Anyways, they decided to post their debut self-titled album for free on the internets as it was taking them ages to find a label. The tracks are all available on Mediafire individually (a .rar of the whole album would be too big for free hosting providers, this is 2 hours 26 minutes of doom!), as linked below. Not sure what quality they're at 'cause I have a CD copy that Steve gave me and ripped directly from that myself. If the quality's not good enough I can post my rips on Rapidshare, or re-rip at 320K if anyone wants.

Hospital Of Death - Beer, Bitches, Blood

Hospital of Death are a heavy metal band from Cheshire in the UK. They combine oldschool NWOBHM vocals and riffs with the speed and energy of the new-wave of thrash metal. Their debut album, Beer, Bitches, Blood, was allegedly 13 years in the making (though the band split up for 12 of those years). Originally formed to play their high school graduation party, the band promptly disbanded. However, they reformed at a band reunion party in 2006 and since then have been on a neverending mission to induce drinking and partying in all who listen to their music.

The album itself is a joyous celebration of thrash and NWOBHM, with tongue thoroughly in cheek throughout. From the opening track Enter The Hospital Of Death, a metal version of the Casualty theme tune, to the final track White The Lightning, this is a great metal album in a traditional vein that doesn't take itself too seriously. And of course, any album that features a cover of Lion's theme for Transformers The Movie could not fail to be awesome!

The second is the Bands Own Copies version, an album recording on lightscribe CD-R (it has stuff on the front) at the best quality in a jewel case with all glossy covers, which apparently takes 2 hours to make! My copy arrived this morning, and I have to say it's well worth the princely sum of £3.00 that I paid for it.
